Composed in 1900 to the poignant text of John Henry Newman’s poem, this gripping oratorio travels through the spiritual journey of a devout man’s soul – Gerontius – navigating from his final moments on Earth to his celestial judgement and eventual entrance into Purgatory. Often considered Elgar’s magnum opus, Gerontius is an unrivalled gem in the realm of choral music featuring a vast orchestra, multiple choirs, and three soloists. The Cambridge University Symphony Chorus is joined by members of the Cambridge University Chamber Choir, members of the choirs of Emmanuel, Fitzwilliam, Girton, Pembroke and Queens' Colleges, East Anglia Chamber Orchestra and a stellar lineup of soloists.
